Some customers prefer the added flexibility of cushions; These can be removed for ease of cleaning and seat interiors or cases can be replaced if a mishap occurs. Cushions also allow you to chose the firmness of the seat. Our standard foam option offers the clean lines commonly associated with chesterfields while a fibre cushion gives a more relaxed “vintage” appearance.

The alternative is the buttoned seat, shown to great effect on the Ludlow.  A more contemporary option offering a firm sit with the piece of mind that comes with knowing cushions slipping or being thrown around is a thing of the past.

Since we started manufacturing in 1951, we’ve manufactured quality chesterfield sofas, and have literally lost count of the number of homes, hotels and businesses we have delivered our furniture to.

Some of our original Chesterfield Sofa designs have remained unchanged over the last 60 years, but one thing has changed notably in the last 5 years and that is the variety of leather colours that our customers are choosing to have their Chesterfields made in.

When we began 100% of our Chesterfield sofas were made in Antique Leather, and our records state that in 2007 as many as 80% of our sofas were still being requested in the most popular Antique Leather Colours – Red, Green Brown and Gold.

The Red Chesterfield Sofa is as recognisably British as Fish and Chips, but Britain is changing, we are more design conscious and as tastes change so do the colours of our sofas.  The Black Leather Chesterfield has become a regular feature on the production floor of our Manchester Factory although unlike Antique leather, a black chesterfield sofa can be made in vintage leather or premium aniline, the difference in the leather type visible on The Chesterfield Company models Ludlow and Balston Models.

The great thing about buying a British made sofa is that you can pick any colour, on any model at any time.  Unlike imported sofas where the choice of colour is limited and forcing your decision The Chesterfield Company makes any of our sofas in over 36 leather colours.  But it doesn’t end there, visit our Manchester showroom and pick from over 500 leathers.  A Chesterfield is a Traditional English Sofa, but it should be as personal as it’s owner, so why not come down and meet our team and create your own personal British Chesterfield.

This post is all about choosing both the perfect leather and size for your home. All of our designs use British Leather and the best British upholstery techniques, passed down through the generations.

Aniline Leather & Aniline Dyes

It is the standard of leather that is used and the treatment to which the leather is subjected, which differentiates high quality leather sofas from inferior products. All of our sofas are made utilises only the top 5% of leather hides.  Aniline or Semi Aniline refers to the dyeing process used to treat the leather, leather that has been finished during the tanning process with Aniline Dye is known as Aniline Leather. The advantage of aniline dye is that the natural surface of the leather is retained, leaving all the character of the natural hide making aniline leather ideal for making beautiful unique sofas.

Semi Aniline  leather is  also treated with aniline dyes, the difference being that a clear sealant topcoat is then applied to give the Leather a sheen and an additional level of protection. These are important considerations to make when choosing a quality Leather sofa, especially as most sofas need to withstand the rough and tumble of family life. All of our sofas are available in full aniline or semi aniline leather.

Where Can I buy a 4 seater sofa?

Sometimes a 2 seat sofa or loveseat is simply not large enough, you want a large sofa you can comfortably lie down on to watch television, that’s why we introduced large leather sofas into the vast majority of our ranges. Our 4 seater sofas crafted with British Leather can seat 4 people and are a striking addition to any living room.
