Our Essential Guide to Sustaining Chesterfield Quality at Home
At The Chesterfield Company, our sofas are handmade with care, using only quality fabrics and leathers. With a little regular maintenance, your furniture will stay comfortable and beautiful for years.
Leather Sofas
Leather is natural, so colour variations, creases, and unique markings are to be expected. Over time, it will soften and stretch, giving a relaxed look that adds character.
Tips:
- Keep away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fires to prevent fading, drying, and cracking.
- Avoid scratches from jewellery, buckles, or pets.
- Wipe areas like headrests and arms regularly to remove body oils and dust.
- Avoid creams, lotions, or sun cream coming into contact with leather.
- Clean gently and consider occasional use of a leather protectant.
Fabric Sofas
We offer a wide range of fabrics, from velvets and boucle to durable EasyClean materials. Each requires gentle care to stay looking its best.
Tips:
- Protect from direct sunlight and heat.
- Cut loose threads instead of pulling them.
- Pilling (fabric bobbles) is normal and can be removed with a de-pilling tool.
-
Pile fabrics like velvets and chenille may show shading or marks where the pile flattens.
General Care
Buttoned Sofas
Buttoned designs, such as Chesterfields or deep-buttoned backs and seats, need a little extra care to maintain their shape and detailing.
Tips:
- Gently vacuum the buttoned areas with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and debris.
- Use a soft cloth or clean, dry brush to lift dust from deep folds and creases.
- Avoid excessive moisture when cleaning to prevent water marks around the buttons.
- For leather buttoned areas, condition lightly to keep the hide supple and prevent tension cracks.
-
If a button becomes loose, avoid pulling it — contact a professional upholsterer for repair.
Cushions: Plump, rotate, and flip weekly. Smooth out creases and unzip covers if needed to adjust filling. Leather cushions should be plumped with the zip open to let air escape.
Dye Transfer: Dark clothing (like denim) can mark lighter fabrics or leathers. Act quickly with the right cleaner.
Cleaning: Avoid bleach, ammonia, alcohol, and scrubbing. Most of our fabrics can be spot-cleaned with cold water and a soft cloth. For stubborn stains, seek professional advice.
Legs: Check feet monthly, tighten if needed, and use felt pads to protect floors. Never drag furniture—always lift carefully.
Footstools: Perfect for tired feet, but not designed as extra seating. Avoid overloading storage stools.
